The Weather on Mars

This detail is a part of a quilt that is not yet finished. A couple of years ago when the Spirit (NASA) travelled to Mars, the local paper was publishing the daily weather report from the red planet. (The weather report was always very, very hot and windy). This quilt was based on a temperature graph from the internet.

The Crimson Forest Stands

This is my first tree quilt. I see a line of red leaved trees on a green hill as in the poem: Along the line of smokey hills the crimson forest stands......
I started with a brief sketch of this scene before I started to piece it together in a free form manner.
The material is all cotton, hand tied and machine pieced. 44" x 34" 2007 Private Collection

Flag Ship

During a trip to Nova Scotia a few years ago, I loved the look of derelict ships, all marked by water and weather.
Materials such as recycled denim and my own hand printed fabric were used. Also japanese fabric represents the wood of the boat. The picture on the left is a photo from our trip out east which helped inspire the quilt. Size: 42" x 31" 2009

Cardboard Study

This quilt started with some ripped cardboard. The ripping exposed the hidden corrugated cardboard and fascinating light and dark spaces. Presently I have a passion for japanese material, because I love the textures, unusual colours and the quality of the fabric. I found this material perfect for the effect I was looking to achieve in this quilt.

African Red Raffia

African Red Raffia was inspired by an African piece worked in raffia. My version is constructed in a log cabin pattern. Half the pieces are so narrow that there is twice as much fabric in the seams at the back of the quilt than on the front of it. The black border is also pieced in the same way.
