Women's Work

Women's Work is based on a work survey done in an African village in the 1970s. Men's activities are on the left while women's are on the right. Warm colours indicate work and cool represent leisure. The Australian economist, Marilyn Waring, who did the survey was interested in showing how many activities performed in the developing world did not have any 'economic value' according to conventional measurement. Of course it also indicated the differences in the amount of work done by men and women. A fair amount of 'artistic license' was taken with the colours and layout of the original survey, but the essential balance between men and women's work and leisure is fair.
